Description

Chair: Eberhard Seifert

Contributors: Stefan Ullrich, Reinhard Messerschmidt, Eberhard Seifert

This contribution is on ongoing standardization activities in the fields of (global) digitalization in general as well as of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in particular, with regards also to the ongoing works on the 2nd roadmap of AI in the German context.
The first part illustrates shortly the 'world' of standardization structures and procedures, not well known to non-involved experts. The second part refers to ongoing global digitalization activities as elements of the transformation processes of Industry 4.0. The third part is on ongoing working groups to develop a 2nd 'Normungsroadmap KI' (NRM KI=Digitalization Roadmap for AI) in Germany. A fourth part is on the worldwide first proposal of the EU-Commission 'Artificial Intelligence Act'.
The concluding outlook will mention some geo-political aspects.

Presentation by Stefan Ullrich: "Standardization, AI, and Sustainability"

In the first part of our input, standardization will be emphasised. We spotlight standardization activities in the fields of (global) digitalization in general as well as of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in particular, with regards also to the ongoing works on the 2nd roadmap of AI in the German context. We briefly illustrate the 'world' of standardization structures and procedures and refer to ongoing global digitalization activities as elements of the transformation processes of Industry 4.0. We look at the 'Normungsroadmap KI' (NRM KI=Digitalization Roadmap for AI) in Germany and the 'Artificial Intelligence Act' proposed by the EU Commission. The concluding outlook of the first part will mention some geo-political aspects.

In the second part, we will ask simply: How do we want to live? This question is particularly relevant in the age of AI, given the narrowing planetary boundaries. AI and sustainability are in a double relationship. On the one hand, AI can be used to make life as convivial as possible. On the other hand, AI also contributes to the enormous energy consumption, at least in the case of the giant models that attract a lot of press attention and are trained for days on end on high-performance computers. The Bits and Trees movement, in which VDW members are also involved, is an example of what public welfare-oriented and peace-minded technology development can look like. However, the question we need to clarify for all of societyis: What does Green AI for Public Good actually mean or imply?
