This workshop "Can de-carbonisation technologies provide an ecosystem equilibrium? A workshop on Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage technologies" is held by Dr. Kostas Stavrianakis, Dr. Jacob Nielsen, and Prof. Zoe Morrison.

While climate change has been described as an imminent threat, there are disagreements on how to best address it. The role of technology in de-carbonising societies has received a lot of attention by researchers as well as governments and organizations with different attitudes towards them. Opinions on the viability of technology to address carbon dioxide emissions (CO2), diverge both on their technical capacity as well as on the moral grounds of sustaining an economic system that perpetuates environmental degradation. In a recent report published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Carbon Capture and Storage technologies were included as a technological solution to achieve net zero emissions. On the contrary, some scholars’ are critical on addressing climate change through technological innovations, as such solutions do not address the problem and they merely ignore other more applicable solutions, e.g. societal and productivity system changes (Stuart et al., 2020).

This proposed workshop is part of an ongoing research study of a European Union funded project on Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage technologies. For the purposes of this session, we aim to explore and collect data on workshop participants’ acceptance and perceptions on CCUS as well as their thoughts on decarbonisation. To facilitate the workshop and initiate discussions amongst other activities we will present a video and an infographic that has been produced as part of the project.
