The members of the European Collegw of Human Ecology organizes a section on the future of human ecology higher education and thereby continue the international exchange established at former meetings. In 2018 (SHE XXIII) we fostered the idea to build a European College of Human Ecology in Germany and to develop a Master program with new concepts and elements in human ecology education. Since then our view on the world has been changed by generation Greta´s global climate initiative, by a pandemic locking down life as we knew it, and a president challenging the foundations of democracy. A sustainable transition to overcome outdated paradigms is required. Human ecology can and must be part of the solution.
Human Ecology as an overarching perspective enables students to become eager agents of change, with the capability to discover pathways of transition for societies and of transformation towards a more sustainable and resilient future. This will be geared towards the discovery of new responsible technologies, practices and methods in communities, ensuring solidarity and democratic reliability.
We hope to attract old and new forces for an inspiring discussion of recent concepts in particular and questions related to the underlying educational ideas in general. With “old forces” we mean people that have been teaching human ecology courses at universities in the past. With “new forces” we think of people interested in alternative ways of education.)
We ourselves, the founders of the European College of Human Ecology (COHE), have explored ways of teaching within regional contexts in cooperation with people and companies. We are convinced that combining a philosophical-scientific background with an opportunity for learning on the job will provide a foundation for educating effective agents of transition.
